The 3rd generation US main battle tank, the M1 Abrams, is the backbone of the US Army and US Marine Corps armored divisions. The Abrams is characterized by its heavy armor (it is one of the heaviest combat vehicles in the world), as well as its powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. The tank first entered service in the early 1980s to replace the aging M-60. It houses an advanced automated fire and control system within its modern armored hull. The Abrams offers more protection for the crew than many of its predecessors, notably due to the design of the separate and highly secured ammunition store in the main body of the tank. It was initially armed with a 105mm gun to be updated and replaced with a more modern and powerful 120mm smoothbore gun.
