Article number MENTS043
Description

In October 1942, the M4 tanks in service with the British army went to battle in El Alamein.

They called it Sherman after a famous American general. In the second half of 1944, the M4A3 (76) W, equipped with an M1 series 76 mm long barrel high-speed tank gun, went into battle. Although the ability to support infantry operations was weakened by the weaker 76 mm round brisance, it had a much stronger anti-armor capability. When firing the T4 HVAP ammunition, the armor was able to penetrate up to 178 mm thick at a distance of 1,000 m. Even using the usual M62 APC, the armor could penetrate up to 109 mm. That is enough to penetrate the front body armor of the German Tiger I heavy tank. By the end of World War II, the M4 Sherman tanks were expanded into a large family of different variants. A total of 49,234 M4 tanks were built.
